WHAT DOES MASSACHUSETTS NEW LAW MEAN?
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts recently passed a law that makes ADUs easier to build statewide. As of February 2, 2025, cities and towns must allow at least one ADU by right in single-family residential districts, meaning homeowners no longer need a special permit or zoning variance for a compliant ADU project. This change is intended to expand housing options, help address the state’s housing shortage, and give homeowners more flexibility in how they use their property.
